23:21:38 <StormTide> springmeyer, ever tried spatialite? im trying ogr2ogr with a -f sqlite .... but that doesn't seem to be a spatialite equivilent
23:22:13 <springmeyer> hey StormTide - yes
23:22:28 <springmeyer> explain what you are doing more?
23:22:42 <StormTide> just taking one of those s57 files and pumping it through ogr...
23:22:52 <StormTide> ive figured out that mapnik wont do for offline mappings sadly
23:22:59 <StormTide> so im trying to see if i can go vector with it now
23:23:19 <StormTide> render the stuff from a spatialite db with an r-tree index...
23:23:46 <StormTide> there's a pretty nifty opensource gis... spatialite-gis...
23:24:02 <StormTide> so i figure if i can get the right combo of conversions to get that gis to load er from a spatialite db...
23:24:10 <StormTide> i can probably render that on the phone ;)
23:24:54 <springmeyer> sure, so render on-demand using sqlite db...
23:25:04 <springmeyer> using Mapnik still? or what?
23:25:05 *** aude has quit (Quit: ChatZilla 0.9.86 [Firefox 3.5.7/20100106054534])
23:25:21 <StormTide> i'd use mapnik but i dont think i could get er on the phone
23:25:47 <StormTide> plus theres some lgpl issues with static linking and such
23:25:55 <StormTide> the spatialite stuff is very permissively licensed
23:26:25 <StormTide> so more likely just some basic opengl es work
23:26:41 <springmeyer> what lgpl issues?
23:27:46 <StormTide> well, if you provide an app that references lgpl in a static format (as required by apples app store) instead of a dynamically linked environment, then, to comply with the license you either have to go fully open source, or provide object-code which can be re-linked against a modified library
23:27:49 <StormTide> eg .a 's and such
23:28:00 <StormTide> prob is... that iphone apps arent really meant to be re-linked, and with the drm and such
23:28:07 <StormTide> kinda defeats the spirit of the license too
23:28:53 <StormTide> so, some lgpl devs like the cocos2d http://code.google.com/p/cocos2d-iphone/wiki/FAQ ... are going for like lgpl + static linking
23:29:01 <StormTide> but it requires a license change and some stuff... so
23:29:02 <StormTide> blah
23:29:14 * springmeyer nods
23:29:55 <StormTide> so anyway, if licenses werent an issue i'd go for mapnik and prob link in geos too
23:30:00 <StormTide> but as it is, probably wont work
23:30:50 <StormTide> which brings me back to the original question of how to get the output of the s57->ogr->sqlite conversion into spatialite... cuz the db appears to create flawlessly
23:30:59 <StormTide> (eg far better than the shp driver)
23:31:47 <springmeyer> well, first make sure you are using latest gdal release
23:32:03 <springmeyer> 1.7 has spatiallite support, while 1.6 may only have sqlite support
23:32:13 * springmeyer guessing...
23:32:23 <StormTide> ooo
23:32:24 <StormTide> ok
23:32:29 <StormTide> i'll check into that
23:32:37 <springmeyer> but, in general realize that sqlite + rtree might do the job
23:32:58 <springmeyer> spatiallite requires geos+proj4, etc
23:33:09 <StormTide> well the spatialite layer seems to provide the needed introspection into the geometries in order to map it to opengl...
23:33:22 <springmeyer> mapnik, for example, works great rendering sqlite+rtree
23:33:23 <StormTide> proj.4 is licensed ok, geos is lgpl too
23:33:42 <springmeyer> "map it to opengl" ?
23:33:56 <springmeyer> so you going to write your own opengl renderer?
23:33:57 <StormTide> like to extract polygons to points and geocode such
23:34:17 <StormTide> springmeyer, maybe.. i'm more interested in wether its technically feasible
