22:08:02 <xreal> Hi there. I've got an important question: Why don't you use MediaWiki for the Mapnik website. I was on a meeting over the last days and we've discussed the bad documentation of Mapnik. The result was, the people can't identify with the TRAC-system and that's why nobody likes to write Mapnik-tutorials and other HowTos. Would you be interested in migrating to MediaWiki?
22:09:11 <Ldp__> it would have to be a parallel wiki, since the current is just part of trac
22:09:46 <xreal> There could be a link to "mapnik wiki" or something.
22:10:16 <xreal> There could also be texts in different languages and a better history system.
22:10:18 <Ldp__> sure, and all real documentation migrated, leaving the trac website just for the tickets/patches
22:10:35 <Ldp__> you'll have to talk to the server admin(s)
22:10:36 <xreal> I would offer my spare time for this.
22:10:47 <Ldp__> which is, at a guess, springmeyer :)
22:10:57 <xreal> Is he at work again?
22:11:17 <Ldp__> he's travelling afaik
22:11:24 <springmeyer> nope back as of today
22:11:28 <springmeyer> hey guys
22:11:36 <Ldp__> hey Dane
22:11:37 <xreal> Ldp: That's the springmeyer-bot only ;-)
22:11:48 <springmeyer> ha!
22:11:52 <xreal> Hi springmeyer.
22:11:52 <springmeyer> I wish
22:12:16 <xreal> Did you read my idea?
22:12:27 <xreal> (don't ask me to post it to trac!!)
22:12:50 <Ldp__> I would've suggested taking it to the mailing lists, for better exposure
22:13:02 <xreal> Okay, let's drop the message there.
22:13:12 * xreal typing.
22:13:16 <springmeyer> I think that ways to encourage better documentation are good
22:13:26 <Ldp__> but first find out if it's even possible on the current server
22:13:43 <xreal> I think, getting Wiki-Space isn't that hard.
22:13:49 <springmeyer> but I would be very surprised if changing from trac to mediawiki would help
22:14:12 <xreal> springmeyer: Most of the mapnik users are OSM users. Currently, much Mapnik code is posted in OSM wiki.
22:14:29 <xreal> Just because it's more easy and common to post text in there ;-)
22:14:44 <springmeyer> xreal: great, so use that then :)
22:14:57 <Ldp__> I'm no big fan of the wiki version on the trac site either
22:15:25 <xreal> @springmeyer: I like sorted content ;-)
22:15:41 <springmeyer> xreal: can you point to the pages that you think are the most useful?
22:15:45 <Ldp__> but to really make it work, you need a good editor in chief. Just migrating to mediawiki as such won't change much
22:17:50 <xreal> springmeyer: The way to create texts is much more easy in wikipedia style. The "usability" is much more common.
22:17:57 <xreal> Usability is a very important part.
22:19:40 <Komzpa> what's the global difference between trac and mediawiki?
22:19:47 <xreal> Hi Komzpa.
22:20:13 <Komzpa> and what part of docs do you need? :)
22:20:17 <Komzpa> hi xreal :)
22:20:25 <xreal> Damn, it's 23:20 ... I need to catch my last bus & train.
22:21:28 <xreal> see you tomorrow.
22:21:37 <xreal> (you can keep on discussing of course)
22:21:38 *** xreal has quit ()
22:21:40 <springmeyer> Ldp__: I was writing a few more postgis test the other day
22:22:20 <springmeyer> and realized we can now use queries that create geometries on the fly and don't actually depend on a table
22:22:26 <springmeyer> an example:
22:22:27 <springmeyer> http://pastie.org/766684
22:22:39 <springmeyer> just make sure the database points to one that exists
22:23:03 <springmeyer> not very useful but fun that it works and thought it might give you some ideas
22:23:18 <Ldp__> I know, I've used created geometries before
22:23:57 <Komzpa> is there transparency for layers in Mapnik?
22:24:03 <Ldp__> I used it for my pseudo density map, but found buffer is just too slow, and I switched to bitmaps :)
22:24:27 <springmeyer> yup, okay
22:24:47 <springmeyer> Komzpa: only at the symbolizer level
22:25:09 <Komzpa> springmeyer: is it planned?
22:25:34 <springmeyer> so if you want a transparent layer just apply a style to it with a transparent symbolizer
22:25:41 <springmeyer> Komzpa: no
22:26:02 <Komzpa> springmeyer: well, let me search for the example
22:26:27 <springmeyer> `PolygonSymbolizer
22:26:28 <nikq> http://trac.mapnik.org/wiki/PolygonSymbolizer
22:26:48 <springmeyer> fill-opacity is likely want you want if you are using polygons
22:26:53 <Ldp__> the example would be rendering an entire layer non-opaque, and then applying a layer-wide transparency. I know I've asked for that before, for my cyclemap
22:27:37 <Komzpa> springmeyer: look at this tile http://tile.latlon.org/pt/17/75531/42142.png
22:27:51 <Ldp__> Komzpa: same problem as I have
22:28:27 <Komzpa> that's a global problem for rendering hybrids :)
22:28:37 <Ldp__> Komzpa: http://overlay.openstreet.nl/openfietskaart-overlay/14/8367/5460.png
22:29:04 <Ldp__> #314
22:29:05 <nikq> Ticket #314: Per-layer opacity and compositing, http://trac.mapnik.org/ticket/314
22:29:23 <Ldp__> ivan made the ticket, but we talked about it on irc back then
22:29:38 <Komzpa> Ldp__: yes. we partially got rid of that by joining consecutive ways, but that's still a problem on T-crossings
22:29:43 <springmeyer> yes, I remember the problem
22:29:59 <Ldp__> joining in postgis is slower
22:30:16 <Komzpa> Ldp__: we join in .osm :)
22:30:22 <Ldp__> Komzpa: OCM composites their tiles in the same way
22:30:58 <Ldp__> springmeyer: would require a temporary canvas for the layer, IIRC
22:32:30 <Ldp__> ah yes, the ticket even says so
22:32:54 <springmeyer> right, aka AGG wizardry
22:34:22 <Ldp__> springmeyer: about generated geometries. As long as you name them the same as the actual geometry field, you're good to go
22:34:33 <springmeyer> from my perspective, also not something that is going to be a priority above other items without distinct funded support
22:34:39 <springmeyer> Ldp__: exactly
22:35:29 <Ldp__> springmeyer: right, and compositing can be solved outside mapnik. Just look at TopOSM. Having it in mapnik is less essential, but would be very cool none the less
22:36:19 <springmeyer> certainly
22:39:17 <Komzpa> ok. another question: I need to render bus, tram and trolley route numbers in different colours on the stops. for now I use four different TextSymbolizers with manually set dy, like here: http://tile.latlon.org/pt/17/75593/42112.png
22:40:25 <Komzpa> any chance to render them like (html) <font color=red>51</font>, <font color=green>1</font>?
22:40:47 <Komzpa> in single line, but different colors.
22:41:09 <Ldp__> didn't you ask that before?
22:41:24 <Ldp__> someone asked for html style text handling
22:41:55 <Komzpa> nope, I asked for implementing HTMLSybolizer, not for other ways to achive that :)
22:43:00 <springmeyer> Komzpa: like I said before there is not support for anything like that right now
22:43:19 <springmeyer> but what you are trying to do certainly strikes me as something that we should try to support better
22:44:09 <springmeyer> I think a really useful ticket would include those images of how far you have gotten using 'dy' and a mockup of what you would prefer it to look like
22:45:42 <Komzpa> springmeyer: now they ask me to add route=share_taxi, and that increases number of symbolizers to 5, not telling about rules :)
